Written by Chrissy:This show is about an English couple Richard and Hyacinth Bucket (played by the great Patricia Routledge). Richard works for the local council and Hyacinth is a house wife. But they are not your typical English pair, Hyacinth is neurotic and will do almost anything to impress others (hence the title of the show), which often leads to her making a fool out of herself. She is unbearable to her neighbors Emmett and Elizabeth. She sings to Emmett whenever he is in earshot and constantly invites Elizabeth over for coffee/tea, in which Elizabeth is always so nervous to break Hyacinth's prized china that she never gets around to drinking any, before it ends up on the carpet.
Hyacinth is utterly embarassed by her sisters, Daisy and Rose and Daisy's husband Onslo because of their lower class status. The only family she will claim is her sister Violet, only because she has a "Mercedes, sauna and room for a pony." Then her son, Sheradon, who has some bizarre habits, like sewing, knitting and living with men, causing the show to have an innuendo that he is anything but straight.
People try their damnest to avoid her, especially the Vicar, milkman and postman. She once made the paperboy wash his ears before coming back to her house to deliver the paper. She loves to have candlelight suppers, but much to the delight of the viewer audience, something always goes wrong.
About the fanlisting's name:
The last name of Richard and Hyacinth is Bucket, but Hyacinth being of the manner she is won't admit that it's really pronounced as it looks, like a bucket. So instead she tells everyone it's French and it pronounced like 'bouquet'. It's one of the on going jokes on the series that makes it so funny. Her face and reaction when people say "Mrs. Bucket" is unforgettable and it usually leads to a door being slammed in their face.
